Water Flow Meters

Why is a flow meter useful?
Flow meters can be used to detect broken pipes, spray heads, faulty valves or faulty wiring. An undetected water leak can take months to detect and lead to expensive water bills. Faulty wiring could mean that your garden isn’t receiving the right amount of water – possibly leading to plants dying and leaving you with the cost of replacing them. A flow meter also allows you to understand the amount of water being placed on your garden. A flow meter means that you can monitor your irrigation system remotely without need to visit onsite.

How does the flow meter work?
A HydraWise flow meter is placed inline with your mains. This allows it to measure water flow through the mains when an irrigation zone is active. Additionally, the flow meter can also detect faulty valves or pipes.

How do I connect a flow meter?
Hydrawise sell two types of flow meters For flow meters which have a diameter of 32mm and lower 3 wires are used from the flow meter to the controller. These flow meters use a dedicated connector on the side of the unit. For flow meters above 32mm 2 wires are used from the flow meter to the controller. Details on configuration are in our how-to guide.

How many flow meters can I use?
Each controller supports up to 3 flow meter inputs – 2 inputs are for flow meters 32mm and below and 1 input for flow meters above 32mm.

How many flow meters should I use?
Most installations will use only 1 flow meter – depending on how many water sources a system has.
Can I share a flow meter between HydraWise controllers?
Yes! A single flow meter can be wired to a single controller and measure flow rates for any number of Hydrawise controllers. This means that if you have multiple controllers 1 flow meter could be shared amongst the controllers.

Can I use my own flow meter?
Yes you can. We support any pulse-based flow meter which has 2 open-closed contact wires.

What alerts can I get from my flow meters?
If your water flow is higher or lower than previous watering cycles then our system can send email or SMS alerts. The thresholds for the alerts are configurable as a percentage of the previous watering cycle. For example you can create an alert if the watering amount is 10% above the previous cycle – this may indicate a broken spray head. Or you could create an alert if the watering amount is 90% less than the previous watering cycle – this may indicate that a system is blocked or wiring is faulty. It is also possible to create an alert if water flow is detected when no irrigation zones are running. This may indicate that you have a broken pipe or stuck valve.

Can I get SMS alerts for water flow problems?
Yes. With the ‘enthusiast’ and ‘business’ plans you have the option of configuring a number for SMS messages to be sent to.
